The Analyst Program

HIC Capital actively recruits the best and brightest students at the University of St. Gallen each year through a highly selective admissions process. The recruitment cycle for our analyst program takes place at the beginning of each fall semester.

Each year, new analysts go through a rigorous analyst school to develop their investment acumen, technical skills and ability to understand the complex operations of companies. HIC Capital members from higher semesters provide our new analyst class with training in everything from fundamental analysis to financial modelling.

Based on their personal research interests, analysts then join one of seven sector teams: Healthcare, Technology Media & Telecom, Financial Institutions Group, Consumer Goods, Industrials, Power Utilities & Infrastructure, or Portfolio Management. Each of these sectors is led by a sector lead and is expected to produce one stock pitch per semester.

At HIC Capital, we believe that being part of our analyst program is about more than just technical skills. We also emphasize the importance of community. Throughout the year, we organize various events and socials that allow our members to bond. From guest speaker sessions to informal gatherings, we ensure that our analysts not only develop professionally but also enjoy a vibrant and supportive social environment.

Does HIC Capital manage real money?

Each year, we recruit 10-15 Assessment students at the University of St. Gallen in our October application cycle. In exceptional cases, students from higher semesters may join on a referral basis during the year. Students typically stay with HIC Capital for the duration of their studies.

We look for students with high agency, a strong drive to learn, a penchant for solving difficult problems, and above all a passion for investing. We typically recruit individuals with exceptional academic performance and a track-record of success in extracurricular activities. While we like seeing relevant internship experience (i.e. investment banking, asset management, accounting & consulting), it is by no means required. We also do not prefer one major over another.

Not at all! We organise analyst dinners and socials throughout the year. Your analyst class won’t only be a group of people you work and grow with, but a circle of friends you can study and have fun with, too.

As an analyst, you can apply for a Sector Lead or Board position as early as the accomplishment of your Assessment year. Each Summer, both Sector Leads and Board Members are recruited among our analysts.

If you are as passionate about investing as we are, we would love to talk to you! While our fall recruitment cycle is focused on assessment students only, we may recruit on a referral basis. Email us at capital@investment-club.ch or talk to one of our board members.

We are a fully english-speaking society.

As long-term oriented investors, we rely on the continuity and consistency of our analyst pool. This carries over to our membership philosophy. Students usually join HIC Capital in their Assessment year and usually stay involved in some form for the duration of their stay in St. Gallen.

Analysts are expected to participate in a weekly meeting on Wednesday evening which takes around 1-2 hours as well as regular meetings within their investment sector. Each sector teams will originate, research, and present one investment idea per semester.

As an accredited society at the University of St. Gallen, we are unfortunately not permitted to hold physical investment positions. Even though we manage a virtual fund, we still hold ourselves to the highest standards when coming up with new investment ideas.
